  4. It is important to evert the upper 
  5. lid and examine the palpebral 
  6. conjunctiva for papillae, cysts, 
  7. concretions, foreign bodies, 
  8. irritation or other anomalies.  With 
  9. the patient in the head rest, have 
  10. the patient look down and grasp 
  11. the upper lid margin over the 
  12. lashes.  With a cotton-tipped 
  13. applicator or other stylus placed 
  14. at the upper lid sulcus (just above 
  15. the tarsal plate) lift the lid up and 
  16. evert it over the stylus.
